Redact a bank statement before sharing it

A landlord, an accountant or a portal asks for a statement, and what they need is the transactions rather than your account number and address. This removes those and brings the file down to a sendable size.

• The text is removed from the file, not covered with a rectangle.
• Dates and amounts are left alone, so the statement is still useful.
• Ends under a megabyte, which is what mail servers accept.

What to take out and what to leave

A redacted statement is only useful if it still proves what it was asked to prove. Account numbers, sort codes, customer reference numbers, your address and any contact details are what somebody can misuse; the transaction dates, the descriptions and the amounts are the reason the statement was requested at all. Take out the first set and leave the second.

The removal is real. A black rectangle drawn over an account number leaves the number in the file underneath, where selecting the text or opening the document in another reader brings it back. That is the single most common way a redaction fails, and it fails silently, because the page looks exactly right.

Why the compression step is in the same job

A statement downloaded from a bank is small. A statement scanned or photographed is not, and the second kind is what gets sent. Bringing it under a megabyte in the same run means there is no moment where the unredacted original and a large redacted copy are both sitting in the same folder waiting to be attached to the wrong email.

The compression aims at the number rather than at a vague quality setting, and it keeps the largest file that still fits, so the figures stay readable. The size it actually reached is reported in words, and a target it could not meet is reported as a miss rather than as a success. Nothing is uploaded at either step. A bank statement is close to the worst document to hand to a free online tool, and it is one of the most commonly handed over.

Will the transactions still be readable?

Yes. Only the detail types you choose are removed, and the compression reports the size it reached rather than assuming it hit the number. Compression is destructive, so open the saved file before sending it, or use the Compress tool, which draws page one on screen first.

Can I aim at a different size?

Yes. The instruction is an editable sentence, so change the number in it to whatever the portal asks for.
