Redact a salary slip before sharing it

A payslip is asked for as proof of income and carries a good deal more than that. This removes the identifiers and leaves the figures that were the reason it was requested.

• Account numbers and identifiers are removed from the file, not covered.
• The salary figures stay, because those are what was asked for.
• Ends under half a megabyte, which is what most forms accept.

What a payslip carries that nobody asked for

Whoever asked wanted to know what you earn. The slip also carries your bank account number, your tax and provident fund identifiers, an employee number, and often a home address. Every one of those is useful to somebody impersonating you and none of them proves anything about your income.

So the identifiers go and the figures stay. The removal is real: characters are taken out of the page content rather than covered with a rectangle, which is the difference between a document you can send and one that merely looks redacted when a reader draws the black box on top of text that is still there.

Why size is part of the same job

Payslips are usually forwarded, and the forms that ask for them usually print a size limit. Doing both in one run means there is never a moment where an unredacted original and a large redacted copy are sitting in the same folder with similar names, waiting to be attached to the wrong message.

The compression aims at the number rather than at a preset, and keeps the largest result that fits so the figures stay legible, and the size it reached is reported rather than assumed. Change the number in the instruction if the form asks for something else. It is a sentence rather than a fixed macro, and the plan shows you what it read before it runs.
