Turn a signed contract into an editable Word file
The executed copy came back as a scan and the next draft has to start from it. This recognises the pages and writes a Word file that keeps the structure rather than a page of loose lines.

What a good conversion keeps
Anyone can produce a Word file full of the right words. The work is in keeping how the page was set: which line was a heading, which paragraph was a numbered item, where a table started and how many columns it had. Lose that and the document is retyped rather than converted.
A page carrying its own text reports all of it, so bold stays bold and the defined term keeps its weight. A scan cannot report weight at all, which is why a recognised page comes back plainer than a digital one; headings are still recovered, from size and position, and numbering is read from the markers rather than guessed at.
The tables are the part that usually fails
Most converters flatten a table into a row of words separated by spaces, which is unrecoverable. The grid here is rebuilt from where the words actually sit on the page, including the awkward cases: a two-deck header, a merged cell spanning two columns, and a figure broken across its own decimal point by a blurred scan, which is closed up rather than dropped.
Figures are the place to look hardest. A long unbroken run of digits is where a recogniser loses one without any sign that it has, and an account number or a figure in a schedule is exactly the kind of thing nobody re-reads. Check them against the scan before the document goes anywhere.
Check the rest of the result too. This is a recogniser, and a recogniser is confident about characters it has got wrong.
Do I need Word installed?
No. The file is a standard .docx, which Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs all open.
What about the signature on the last page?
It is an image on the page, so it is converted as a picture. Treat the .docx as a drafting copy, not as an executed document.
