Ask a question across a year of invoices
Twelve months of invoices is a filing cabinet, not a document. This reads them all and answers a question across the set, naming the file and page each part of the answer came from.

Two kinds of search, because one is not enough
A meaning search finds the invoice that talks about freight when you asked about shipping, and misses the one you wanted by its reference number. A word search does the opposite. Run only one and the failure is invisible: you get an answer, it is fluent, and the document you were actually thinking of is not in it.
Both run here, along with a search over the terms the documents themselves lean on, and the three results are fused. Then the passages chosen are spread out rather than being five copies of one, so the answer is built from five different places rather than from one paragraph quoted five times.
Across files, agreement is the finding
Within one document, two passages saying the same thing waste a slot. Across two documents they are the point: an invoice and a statement agreeing on an amount is corroboration, and the two disagreeing is the thing you were looking for. The penalty that pushes out near-duplicates is halved between documents for exactly that reason, and it was found the hard way, by an answer that named one date with complete confidence while the second source quietly lost its place.
Nothing retrieved means the question never reaches the model. You are told the documents do not answer it rather than being handed a paragraph assembled out of the closest thing available, which is the failure this design exists to prevent.
Recognition and retrieval both run on this device, which is the reason a year of invoices can go through this at all. A folder of supplier invoices is a list of who you buy from and what you pay them, and it is not a folder to hand to a service in exchange for a search box.
How many invoices can I add?
A library of up to twenty files. The page budget and the limits are shown before anything is read.
Does it total the amounts?
No. It quotes each figure with its source and says plainly that it does not add them up.
