Merge first, then aim at the number

Compressing each document and then joining them gives a result whose size nobody controlled: eight files each under the limit make one file well over it. Merging first and compressing once means the search for the size runs against the thing the portal is actually going to measure.

It is also faster, because the whole pack is redrawn once per attempt rather than once per file per attempt, and the plan moves the steps into that order for you if you write them the other way round, printing the reason against the step rather than silently rearranging.

Order matters more than it looks

A visa checklist is a list, and the officer reading the pack is working down it. A pack in checklist order is read; a pack in whatever order the files were selected is searched, slowly, by somebody with a hundred more to get through. The order in the list here is the order in the finished file.

Bookmarks from each document survive the merge, so the pack has a sidebar rather than ninety undifferentiated pages.

Nothing is uploaded. A visa pack is passport pages, bank statements and an employment letter in a single file, which is close to a complete identity, and the portals that demand it in one small file are the reason people reach for free online mergers. This one never sees the documents: the merge and the compression both happen inside the browser tab, and nothing about either survives the tab being closed. There is no account and no queue.

It names the size it reached and suggests splitting rather than handing back an over-limit file.

Will the text stay searchable?

Compressed pages are redrawn as pictures, so keep the original documents as well as the pack.
