Shrink statements for an upload portal

A portal wants six months in one file and refuses anything over a printed limit. This joins them and works the result down to the number, saying so plainly if the number is out of reach.

• Merged before compressing, so the size is worked out once on the whole file.
• Aims at the number the portal printed, not at a vague preset.
• A miss is named with the size it reached, never reported as success.

Aim at the number, not at a quality setting

Nobody arrives here wanting balanced. They arrive because a portal refused an upload and printed a limit. So the size is the input: the tool walks a ladder of resolution and quality combinations, measures each result, and settles on the largest one that still fits under the number.

The largest, not the smallest. Somebody capped at two hundred kilobytes wants the most readable two hundred kilobytes, and a tool that hands back eighty has spent readability it did not need to spend.

Three outcomes, all of them said out loud

Under the number, which is the ordinary case. Already under it before anything was redrawn, in which case the original is handed back untouched because it is the better copy. Or out of reach, which names the smallest size it actually got to and suggests splitting the file.

That third one is why a miss is never dressed up as a success. The portal hard-rejects, and a wrong number costs somebody the trip. Page one is also drawn on screen before anything is saved, because compression is destructive and only the person holding the statement can say whether the digits are still readable.

Merging happens first so the compression runs once over the finished document rather than once per file, which is both faster and the only way to hit a limit that applies to the whole upload.

None of it leaves the tab. Six months of statements is a complete picture of somebody's finances, and the portals that demand it in one small file are the same portals people reach for a free online compressor to satisfy.

What if it cannot reach the size?

It says so, names the size it reached, and suggests splitting. It never hands back an over-limit file as though it had worked.

Will the text still be selectable?

No. Compressed pages are redrawn as pictures, so keep the original if you need to quote from it later.
