Summarise a contract in plain English

Before the detailed read, a page that says what this document is, who it binds and what it asks of them. Recognition runs first, so a scanned signed copy summarises as readily as a digital one.

A summary is a starting point, not a substitute

The useful thing a summary does with a contract is orient you: what kind of agreement this is, who the parties are, what the term is, and which sections carry the obligations. It is the page you read before deciding which twelve pages to read properly, and it is wasted if it is treated as the reading itself.

So the wording here stays close to the document. It reports what the contract says rather than characterising it, because a summary that calls a clause unusual has made a judgement nobody asked it for and cannot check.

A document can try to give the model orders

A line reading "ignore all previous instructions" in the body of a PDF is an old trick, and a subtler one is a sentence asserting something about the summary itself: a reference number that must appear in any faithful summary, say. That is a command wearing the grammar of a fact, and it walked straight through the obvious filter and became the title of a slide.

Text shaped like that is detected and flagged above the summary, and the warning is written into the head of the saved file as well. Saving a summary and forwarding it used to strip the one signal that the source was hostile, because the summary's own wording is neutral by design.

The warning names what it found rather than simply asserting that something is wrong, so you can look at the line yourself and decide. Most of the time the answer is that an innocent sentence happened to be phrased as an obligation, and dropping one line is a cheaper mistake than answering from a hostile one.

How long is the summary?

Short. A handful of paragraphs covering what the agreement is and what it requires, rather than a section-by-section paraphrase.

Does it need the AI model downloaded?

Yes, once. It is fetched from a public model host on first use and cached by your browser; the document itself is never sent.
